Bar Exams – the Agony of Waiting for the Results

The examination for admission to the Philippine Bar (the Bar refers to the aggregation of all lawyers in the Philippines) is one of the most, if not THE most, difficult Philippine licensure exams. Some even say that it’s the most difficult bar exam in the world, primarily because it’s an essay-type exam (there’s already a proposal to adopt objective multiply-choice questions for 30%-40% of the total number of questions).

This year, 6,344 law graduates from 100 Philippine law schools took the 100-year-old plus Bar exams. The 2006 Bar exams is not much different from the previous ones: four pressure-packed Sundays of September to cover eight subjects, sleepless nights of intense review, physical suffering, mental anguish, fright, serious anxiety and mental shock (which ordinarily are the components of moral damages). If there’s one word that sums it all up, it’s “torture”

Now that the 2006 Bar exams are over and as the day of the release of the results approaches, the mental torture is going to get worse. Someone, most probably an examinee, left a comment at the other site, asking how to cope with the stress of waiting for the results. There’s really no formula, although here’s what I did:

1. Work. A few days after the bar exams, I started working as an associate in a law firm. It’s a common knowledge that the newest associate dwells at the bottom of the food chain, so to speak, and anyone up the ladder gives you work. You’ll forget the Bar exams in due time – until your boss and peers tell you about “rumors” that the results will out early (it’s usually released during the first quarter of the year).

2. Forget your answers. Some examinees go to great lengths discussing answers with classmates. It’s a useless exercise, as confirmation is achieved only when the results are out. You can get your exam booklet from the Supreme Court, although I didn’t get mine.

3. Remember that it’s out of your hands. The moment you submitted your exam booklet, nothing else could be done to affect the results. Stop worrying because, as stated in that famous article (or song), “worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum”. Stop worrying.

4. Pray. This prayer worked for me: “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.” It still works for me now.

Anyway, the highest bar exams passing rate was in 1981 – a sensational 43%. Here’s a quick look at the results of the more recent bar exams:

2005 results: out of 5,610 examinees, 1,526 passed (27.2% passing rate). UPLaw was No. 1.

2004 results: out of the 5,249 examinees, 1,659 passed (31.61%). U.P. topped the exams.

2003 results: out of the 5,349 examinees who took the exams, 1,108 passed (20.71%). Ateneo topped it that year.

2002 results: out of 4,659 examinees, 917 passed (19.68%). UST topped it.

2001 results: out of 3,849 examinees, 1,266 passed (32.89%). UP was No. 1.

2000 results: out of 4,698 examinees, 979 passed (20.84%). Still U.P.

1999 results: out of 3,978 who completed the examinations, 660 passed (16.59%). U.P. and Ateneo de Davao shared No. 1.

Update (21 March 2007): I was pleasantly surprised to see an increase in hits in the previous post on the agony of waiting, which is probably because of the persistent “rumor” that the 2006 bar exams result will be released tomorrow, 22 March 2007. But, guys, relax (if that’s possible). Take this week to get some rest. Go to a retreat. Continue working. Get a vacation. My crystal ball says that the results won’t be released this week. My crystal ball also favors odd (as opposed to “even”) dates next week. Maybe my crystal ball will be kind enough to give updates. Read more discussions and updates here.

Update (28 March 2007): The blog atty-at-work, where the discussions and updates on the 2006 bar exams are being posted, wasn’t able to accomodate the heavy traffic. Hopefully, it will be up and running soon. Updates will also be posted here from now on in case the other site conks out again. Here are the more recent updates in that site:

Update (24 March 2007): I believe everybody knows about the petition of Satur Ocampo pending with the Supreme Court, although not everybody knows that it’s scheduled for oral arguments on March 30. The SC will have its hands full, so to speak, and will get less time to tackle the bar results prior to that date. So, according to my crystal ball, our future lawyers have to extend their period of “reflection” until April 2-4. (By the way, thanks to Mish for the splendid performance of our free server. I hope it continues that way so we can continue providing updates.)

Update (27 March 2007): I’m thinking not to call this an “update”, because there’s nothing “new” to say. Anyway, my crystal ball is not saying anything. This means that the last update still holds true.

Update (28 March 2007): C’mon, folks, it’s not gonna be tomorrow, and it’s not gonna be Friday. J-Day is next week. If I’m wrong, then I have to make dagok my crystal ball =) Is 3 a good number?

Update (2 April 2007): I was hesitant to write anything yesterday, April Fools’ day, especially when what I had to say is something important – the bar results will be released tomorrow, 3 April 2007. I noticed that so many future lawyers (their friends and loved ones included) had swamped my Atty-at-Work site, causing it to become unavailable. So, in order for our friends to have another venue to express their colorful emotions (and ease the traffic at the other site), I’m temporarily disabling the registration requirement here so that anyone may release pent-up emotions and post their comments.

Update: It’s official – the SC says that the results will be released tomorrow, April 3.

Update (3 April 2007): Folks, relax, there’s still a few hours before the release, most probably around 6 p.m. By then, you’ll know that the passing rate is only 30-point-something-percent. God bless and good luck.

Congratulations to our new lawyers!

sometimes i’m thinking that the longer i wait for the result the longer my agony would be.. but now the result is fast approaching i think am not as ready to know the result.i feel so nervous every time i think about it.but well …for me that’s but normal…to feel nothing at all is more dangerous than feeling something which i myself cannot understand nor can explain. now that the result be released the soonest, i fervently hope and pray that God may guide us all…give us all the strengths we needed and the courage to face whatever would that be..god bless and good luck my fellow soon to be lawyers..i for one can no longer afford another torture and im sure you too guys…

I noticed that in the SCs courtnews flash, no entry has been made for 4 days now! Is this an indication that they would post it sometime 2nite?

rinkumi, i can’t say if that’s true because I haven’t heard anything definite. There are rumors that the passing rate is 40%, while there are rumors that it’s way below 40%. I’ll have to ask my crystal ball =)

By the way, you need to sleep…you’ll need the strength for a tension-filled day tomorrow.

I’m loosing my mind already, what I mean is by DQs. As above-mentioned that there is no DQs in Taxation and Criminal Law, does it mean that there are no delinquents in the said subjects? Thank You…

DQs meaning DISQUALIFIED examinees… those who obtained a grade lower than 50 in a certain subject .

Folks, relax, there’s still a few hours before the release, most probably around 6 p.m. By then, you’ll know that the passing rate is only 30-point-something-percent. God bless and good luck.

I was with my bf during the exam waking up 4am para lang prepare ang food niya, see to it na wala siyang nakalimutan pero nung last sunday nakalimutan niya yung watch nya na i even beg to the vendors in La Salle na ipagpalit even alarm clock nila for my cellphone para lang may watch siya during the exam and i felt like nakakapagod although its a pleasure doing that to the one you love so dearly but you can’t ignore the feeling na nakakapagod but then i realize na wla pa siguro sa katiting nun ang nararamdaman ng bf ko or ng mga nag-take ng exam at naghihintay ng result. Only those people in your place or had been can comprehend what your feeling right now. Don’t loose hope whatever happens remember that its when things seems worst that you must not quit. I’am praying peace and acceptance for everybody.

As early as 7:30 AM today, the rumor mill has it that the results of the 2006 exams are already in.

In MSU-Marawi, names are spewed out supposedly passing the exams. So far, the SC site has not yet updated its announcements on bar results so I’m wondering it may have already been posted at the SC halls.

No confirmation as of yet. I’m confident it would come out mid-evening so, guys, mahaba-habang inuman pa! 🙂 bring on the RHs!

As it is, passing the bar requires only three things: READ, READ, RED HORSE! hehehe..

Yomar, the numbers don’t add up.

The sum of all the figures divided by the number of subjects should get us to 30.6%.

Your figures gets us to about 40% passing. Maybe merong na-miss, pki-confirm with your source.

Nonetheless, very informative yung posts mo, so keep it coming! 🙂

16.8%? wow that’s low 🙁 Kung totoo ito, then it would be the lowest in the last 6 years. To think Justice Sandoval-Gutierrez mentioned before that she was looking at a 50% passing rate because she said she knew what it felt for a mother to have a son flunk the bar.

Be it 16%, 30.6%, 32% and all other figures whatsoever.

what matter is that the SC has already decided on our fate. No one can change that.

Lets just brace ourselves, and prepare for impact!

    Reply

denden, i think the numbers need not add up because not everyone who passes the bar necessarily passes all the subjects. as long as no DQs.

Most of us, if not all, are gearing towards a better society for a better future. Whatever the result of the 2006 Bar Examinations is we should accept it and think that we are still successful in our own way even if we were not among those who were blessed to have the title this year. So long as we did our best and that we know deep in our heart that we have good intentions in becoming a lawyer, then, we are blessed . We may not have the title yet, not yet as of the moment, as this may not yet be the right time for us. But in God’s time, it will come. Surely, it will come to us if it is really meant for us. God bless us all…May we be given the license to serve for the best interest of justice…..

University of the Cordilleras grad tops bar

The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday has released the list of successful examinees of the 2006 Bar Examinations with a graduate of University of the Cordilleras as the topnotcher, ABS-CBN News learned.

Noel Malimban got 87.6% followed by Debora Acosta of the University of the Philippines with a grade of 87.4%. Two Ateneo Law School graduates Erika Jimenez and Maria Teresa Carlos closely followed with grades of 86.6% and 86.1%. Fifth was Gina Rubio of Far Eastern University Institute of Law with 85.75%.

Others in the top ten are Ann Julie Tan (85.70% Dr. Vicente Orestes Romualdez Educational Center); Karen Gaviola (85.68% University of San Carlos); Al Shawid Ishmael (85.65% University of Cebu); Timothy Mendoza (85.55% UP) and Alain Deloso (85.05% UP)

6,187 aspirants took the examinations in September last year at the De La Salle University in Taft Avenue, Manila. The SC said this number is a record high since the first Bar examinations were held in 1901 with only 13 examinees.

1,893 or 30.60 percent of the total examinees successfully hurdled the tough examinations for lawyers in the country.

The 2006 Bar examinations consisted of eight tests and was held on four successive weekends last September 2006. The examinations were administered through Deputy Clerk of Court and Bar Confidant Ma. Cristina B. Layusa.

Justice Angelina Sandoval-Gutierrez, chairman of the Committee on the 2006 Bar Examinations, on Monday said the list will be displayed on LCD monitors in strategic places at the front yard of the Supreme Court, near the entrance at Padre Faura St. The results can also be accessed at http://www.supremecourt.gov.ph, the official website of the high court.

Last year, a total of 1,526 out of 5,607 examinees from around 100 law schools nationwide passed the 2005 Bar examinations. The number of those who passed represented 27.22 percent of the total examinees.

In 2004, a total of 1,659 out of 5,249 examinees, or 31.61 percent, passed. In 2003, 20.71 percent of the examinees or 1,108 out of 5,349 who took the exams passed. In 2002, 4,659 took the Bar exams and only 917 examinees or 19.68 percent passed.

According to the rules of court, a Bar examinee is deemed to have passed the examination if he has obtained a general average of 75 percent in all subjects without a grade below 50 percent in any subject. In determining the average, subjects in the examinations are given the following relative weights: Political and International Law, 15%; Labor and Social Legislation, 10%; Civil Law, 15%; Taxation, 10%; Mercantile Law, 15%; Criminal Law, 10%; Remedial Law, 20%; and Legal Ethics and Practical Exercises, 5%, for a total of 100%.

According to the high court, this year’s Bar examinations mark the second time that the “five-strike” rule is being implemented. The rule limits to five the number of times a candidate may take the Bar exams, which is reputed as the toughest government-administered test. The five-strike rule is in accordance with the Court’s resolution in Bar Matter No. 1161.

Bar Matter No. 1161 provides for the “(d)isqualification of a candidate after failing in three (3) examinations, provided, that he may take a fourth and fifth examination if he successfully completes a one (1) year refresher course for each examination; provided, further that upon the effectivity of this Resolution, those who have already failed in five (5) or more bar examinations shall be allowed to take only one (1) more Bar examination after completing a one (1) year refresher course.”

The 2005 bar examinations was topped by Joan A. de Venecia of the University of the Philippines and a niece of Speaker Jose de Venecia with a grade of 87.20 percent.

The highest passing percentage for the past 10 years was in 1998 – almost 40 percent. The lowest was in 1999, 16 percent.

The Philippine bar started in 1901 with just 13 examinees. It has produced four presidents who were topnotchers: Manuel Roxas (1913), Carlos Garcia (1923), Diosdado Macapagal (1936) and Ferdinand Marcos (1939).

The examinee with the highest grade is reportedly Florenz Regalado of San Beda, who scored 96 percent in 1954. Regalado is a retired Supreme Court justice.

thanks atty. fred for giving us this venue to breathe out and express our sentiments while waiting for the release of the bar results. now that the results are out, i thank God first and foremost for the strength and courage he has bestowed upon me to make it through the tough september month of last year. i thank too my grade school teachers for teaching me the best rule of them all– subject verb agreement. i give thanks as well to the great teachers of philosophy who have inspired me to think rationally above all else and maintain that intelligent logic ( and common sense) that so far has been the age old secret in passing the bar exams ( along with great command of the english language and of course, stock knowledge). lastly, to my friends, who like me, have all passed with flying colors, for those sleepless nights and intellectual musings that has kept my spirits up and waking hours even longer during the critical months of review. to all of us who made it. WE DESERVED IT. Welcome to the practice.

Paul, Val, Chaos…attorneys….you’re very much welcome. Congratulations!

After all the sleepless nights, anxiety, loss of appetite…you finally made it. Passing the bar exams, even taking it, is never easy. But the more difficult part is up ahead. In the years to come, you will be faced with the more difficult choice between staying true to your idealism and going with the flow, so to speak. You will face burn-outs and dilemmas. You will be faced with moral questions, something which could not be simply waved off by saying that the law is an ammoral instrument. You will become part of the system.

    Or maybe not.

I’m sure this won’t be our last discussion.

God bless and good luck, counsels.

atty fred you’ve given the best advice for us, and when the 25th of april finally comes, where we are officially bestowed the privilege of practicing law as a profession, i will take that to heart. it is true that idealism for many recedes and many will be swallowed by the dirty system if i can call it that. that brings to mind what practice i truly want to engage in and whatever i may venture into in the near future, all i want to maintain in high regard is to be just and fair in all my dealings. it seems that the simplest things in life ( not only in the law profession) are really hard to maintain. e.g. honesty, fairness and equality…. for me, i’d simply live by these rules: to be equal, fair and just.

Atty. Fred, your idealism and fire is beginning to burn deep into these rookies hearts. Warm hugs from us…Thanks Sir.

Congratz to our BSC (batting average: 40%. Not bad for a pioneering law school, eh!?!)

Congratz to all who made it. Keep the flame burning!

To all who did not make it: never mean you’re less worthy than those who preceded you– perhaps the best is reserved for last…

    Godbless.

    hangang may mabuting damo………..may adik!

ANYONE KNOWS THE PASSING RATE OF SAN BEDA FOR THIS YEAR BAR EXAM? THE BEDAN ALUMNI ARE DISAPPOINTED WHY NO BEDAN LANDED IN THE TOP TEN… THIS MUST BE THE OFFSHOOT OF THE POLITICS WHICH ROCKED SAN BEDA LEADING TO THE TERMINATION OF ALMOST ALL OF THE VETERAN PROFESSORS.

AND WHO ARE THOSE BEDAN GRADS WHO WERE ALLOWED TO GRADUATE NOTWITHSTANDING THEIR TWO FAILURES IN ONE SUBJECT?

THIS MUST BE THE START OF THE DECLINE OF BEDAN PERFORMANCE IN THE BAR EXAM? I HOPE NOT.
